The pause with the announcement of the match of the “classical branch” of the unifying world championship between Vladimir Kramnik and Peter Leko was postponed for a long time. There was a message on chess sites, the premier-minister of Hungary wanted to conduct this struggle in Budapest. But the super tournament was completed in the capital of Hungary, and there was no the being expected announcement of the match. Having expressed by the language of programmers, the match Kramnik – Leko was “hung”…
There was an unexpected painful message from Buenos-Aires on the eve of the Easter. It was said in it with a reference on to the grandmaster Migel Kinteros, one of the organizers of the match Ponomariov – Kasparov, that the match for the world FIDE champion title was postponed on November – December.
If this message is correct, the next cycle of the world championship play was under the threat of failure!
I was lucky, because the president was just flown from Dagestan and was located in his Moscow study in the representative office of Kalmykia.
At first, the fax from Kinteros was presented to me. Then I heard – in the broadcast – a talk of the FIDE president with the executive FIDE director, Emanuel Omuku…
The grandmaster Kinteros apologized for alien mistakes. “We didn’t spoke to journalists, - Kinteros wrote in fax, - that wanted to postpone the match Ponomariov - Kasparov on to November. Vice versa, the president of Argentina, doctor Dukhalde, is waiting for your visit to Buenos-Aires, where your press-conference, joint with it and with sponsors, will be held”.
In the beginning of the May, the president of FIDE and Kalmykia, Ilyumzhinov, will probably visit the president of Argentina, doctor Dukhalde.
…Mister Omuku answered the telephone call quickly. There was a question of Ilyumzhinov (with my presenting): “What news about the conducting of the match Kramnik – Leko?” The answer of Omuku didn't need in translation:
- “Enschtein” has money problems…
- What’s with Budapest, Emanuel? – the FIDE president continued investigation.
- There is no any news from from Budapest, and Argentina went with an offer to conduct the match Kramnik – Leko in their country.
- It was felt, that the message was unexpected also for the FIDE president.
Argentina?! Not only refuses of one match, but also wants to conduct the other one?!
- It is interesting turn of events!
Having found at the FIDE president, I certainly tried also to know about the other most important chess news. There are some of them.
Last week Ilyumzhinov was in New York and Washington. He spoke with the required people. These people expressed interest in conducting of the new match of the strongest player among people versus the world champion among computer programs. Such match will take place in future year and will be conducted in California. The December FIDE world Cup will be probably held in New York (128 chess players, knock-out system, definition of contenders of the new cycle of the world championship’s playing). Besides that, New York is prepared to conduct the match for the absolute world champion title.
Next news: introduction of the single rating for all the types of control (blitz, rapid, official FIDE control and seven-hour, “professional” control) – is not far off. The working meeting with those, who will account this rating, has already been conducted.
As to the “revolutionary” offer of Ilyumzhinov to introduce the new system of account of points (it was called by the “football” system) – to give 3 points for a victory, 1 point – for a draw, and 0 points – for a failure, this offer will be properly studied.
Iluymzhinov showed to me invitation to the next session of the Intergovernmental oceanographic commission, which he received from J. Rogge. During the session the FIDE president will make a report. Not about the football. Though Kirsan Nikolaevich is also interested in football.
I think, even not less than in chess.
