Your correspondent was by the first man in the world, who informed about invention of the new type of chess moves’ transfer on great distances. It was during the tournament of contenders on classical chess, held in Dortmund. Then during the reportage from Germany, having foreseen the great future of this invention from the Petersburg’s firm “Shakhcom”, I exclaimed: “Attention, dear Sirs! The new chess era is coming!”
So this new era has come.
This is a unique event about which I have to tell today. The other company from Petersburg, “Intellectual games”, headed by Vladimir Bazhenov, was responsible for the financial-organizational part of the novelty of “Shakhcom”. Bazhenov is convinced, that chess may be not less enchanting and financially attractive, than famous “Big prizes”. According to the amplitude of that I could see, the head of the “Intellectual games” has seriously organized the show and the show was grandiose. The best chess forces, including the world champion, Vladimir Kramnik and world champion of FIDE-99, Alexander Khalifman, brilliant grandmasters Victor Korchnoi, Peter Svidler and Konstantin Sakaev, the young talents, Sergei Karyakin and Teimour Radjabov, took part in this show… The FIDE arbiter ¹ 1, Gert Giyssen, judged the match. The great champions, Boris Spassky and Anatoly Karpov commented on the games in the air for spectators, having gathered in the hall of the International press-center “300 years to Saint Petersburg”. The FIDE president, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and the president of the Russian chess federation, Alexander Zhukov, were among the other celebrities, who watched for the show.
At first, Bazhenov, having invested his own big assets in the organization of this match, earned admiration and gratitude of the Petersburg’s citizens and their guests. In future he hopes to repay costs. We’ll see it in future. If there are more such progressive businessmen, who showed interest to this type of sport, Ilyumzhinov hadn’t to wait for support of the sponsors in the Far Argentina… By the way, I will intrigue our readers. We are on the threshold of the supersensation. Kirsan Nikolaevich confidentially informed about it. But I still have not a right to disclose the information concerning it. I will only say, the speech also goes about the match Ponomariov – Kasparov.
However, it is time to tell about the essence of the innovation of Petersburg’s intellectuals in business of transfer of chess moves for far distances, and in the given case – from the city on Neva to the city on Sena and back.
Chess were for a long time ago consolidated on web pages. Spassky and Karpov gave the séances of the simultaneous game via Internet, where the people from different and distant planet’s regions participated. COMBINING COUNTRIES AND CONTINENTS
The presidents of chess federations of Russia and the world, participants of the first match on chess on correspondence highly appreciated the invention of the intellectuals from Petersburg.
ZHUKOV:
- We will obligatory carry out such matches in future, because the teams of any, even the highest level, may compete in them. Everything was enchanting and beautiful. I liked the comments of Spassky and Karpov very much.
ILYUMZHINOV:
- It is an excellent means of chess popularization! You may arrange the matches between continents, countries and cities, not spending time and money on flights and hotels. I don’t exclude, that we will use this invention in the selective competitions of the FIDE world championship.
GIISSEN:
- This is exclusively important event! Today, when the search of means for the conducting of competitions of the most different level became by the main problem in the chess world, chess on correspondence are very perspective.
KORCHNOI:
- It is not simple to play from the psychological point of view, when you don’t see an opponent. You start thinking, who is struggling with you, may be it is Kasparov?!…
KARPOV:
- I like playing with such opponent, who sits with you at the same table. SVIDLER: - During such match the arbiter is near you – and this is very important. When you may see your opponent on the TV screen, all the questions disappear. We should support the people, who try to invent something new in our type of sport. However, I don’t consider, that chess on correspondence will be by the standard of the game in the official competitions. But chess may become by the standard of conducting of similar show, combining all world and gathering the grandiose auditorium.
KRAMNIK:
- It is the main thing, that this match showed: the new technologies appear in chess, and you may play, not going very far. It is good, that people, in order to participate in similar competitions, will often visit the chess clubs. WATCHFUL KORCHNOI Yes, it was a brilliant show (15 minutes per all the game plus 10 seconds, having added for each move). The youngest world grandmaster, 13-year Sergei Karyakin, having played for the Parisian club, and Konstantin Sakaev, having located in the special premises near the conference-hall of the International press-center “300 years to Saint Petersburg”, were by the first chess players, who started playing. The Karyakin’s game was largely shown on the screen, he was dressed in a strict suit with tie. At first, the young trainer of the FIDE world champion, Ruslan Ponomariov, played very well. Anatoly Karpov, who commented on the struggle, already won the position of Konstantin, but the experienced captain of Petersburg’s citizens, Boris Spassky and the second commentator expressed hopes on the favorable outcome of the struggle for our team, having reminded the popular expression “It is heavier to win the “won” positions”. In fact, when Karyakin made two-three indecisive moves (25.b4!), the Petersburg’s chess player Sakaev made a draw.
During the second struggle the honor of the 300-year Peter was defended by a 72-year Korchnoi, and a 22-year Laurent Fressinet opposed to him in the old city of Paris.
- If the game is played with the other control, I wouldn’t stand, - the main hero of the match admitted. But the control was rather rapid, and Korchnoi developed the furious rate: he spent 5 minutes for all the game – up to the transition into the rook ending, and his young competitor (difference in age – 50 years), vice versa, played slowly. Korchnoi said to me after the match ending the following: - Fressinet has been playing this system for all his life and isn’t afraid to be found in the technically worst position. But, on the other hand, in due time he lost two games, and that is why he is afraid of me and respects me as to the chess player. So, as a result, he isn’t afraid of a position. Besides, he appeared to be rather lazy, in time to change the habitual repertoire and was found himself in the worst position.
We should add, that Korchnoi, having demonstrated the phenomenal technique, surpassed Fressinet.
“White” Teimour Radjabov, having played for the Parisian club and “black” Peter Svidler, the proud of the chess Petersburg, played during the third game. As a result, there was a draw from the position of a force, as the head of the press-center, Mark Taimanov, said. Of course, from the position of a force of Svidler.
In conclusion, the former FIDE champion Khalifman and the present champion on classical chess, Kramnik met. One more draw from the position of a force, now of Khalifman, having provided the final account, favorable for Petersburg. So, the historical match on chess on correspondence brought a victory to the friendly team of Saint Petersburg.
