17 August, 1911M. Botvinnik was born on August, 17, 1911 in the settlement Repino, former Kuokkala, now Leningrad region. Botvinnik is the sixth champion in the chess history and the first Soviet world champion (1948 - 57, 1958 - 1960, 1961 - 63).
The International grandmaster (1950) and International arbiter on a chess composition (1956); honoured master of sport of USSR (1945), sevenfold champion of USSR (1931 - 1952). The chairman of the All-Union chess section (1938 - 1939) and board of the society "USSR-Netherlands" (since 1960). Honoured employer of culture of RSFSR (1971). Doctor of technical sciences, professor.
In the 12-year age he was acquainted with chess, in the 14-year age had the 1st category, in 16-year age made his debut in the championship of USSR (1927) - the 5th-6th place (title of master of sport of USSR). Victories in the championships of Leningrad (1931 - 32), tournaments of the Leningrad masters (1930, 1932-33), championships of USSR (1931, 1933) have pushed Botvinnik in a number of the strongest chess players of the country. Meetings with the leading foreign chess players have confirmed the high class of his play: a draw at the match with S. Flor (1933); the 1st place at the Leningrad tournament of masters with a participation of M. Eive and H. Kmokh (1934); the 1st-2nd place (with Flor) at the 2nd Moscow International tournament (1935; ahead of Em. Lasker), H.R. Capablanca); the 2nd place at the 3rd Moscow International tournament (1936); the 1st-2nd place (with Capablanca) at the Nottingham tournament (1936; ahead of A. Alekhin, Eive, Em. Lasker). Botvinnik had carried the skills of preparation to the chess competitions up to the mastership by that period.
Since 1930ss Botvinnik - is the leader of Soviet chess players: victories in the championship of USSR (1939), in the match with V. Ragozin (1940), at the International tournament for a title of the absolute champion of USSR (1941).
In 1951 Botvinnik played drew the tournament on the world championship with D. Bronstein and preserved the champion title.
A whole epoch is connected with the name of Botvinnik in the chess history. He was the first, who confirmed the priority of the Soviet chess school in the world chess.
He was the first, who paid the special attention to the questions of chess players' training, created his own method of preparation to competitions. Botvinnik has made a valuable contribution in the theory of many openings, developed a line of original systems of opening.
