Plays chess since the 6-year age. She perfected her mastership in the Pioneer House of Tbilisi under leadership of M. Shishov. In the 12-year age she successfully played at the championship of USSR among girls: 1973 - the 3rd place. In the structure of the combined team of USSR a participant of the match USSR - Yugoslavia (1973), won in the play with the International master V. Kalkhbrenner - 4:0. Having made her debut in the female International tournament, held in Brashov (1974), Chiburdanidze conducted a competition without defeats, occupied the 1st place and executed the rate of the International master. The champion of USSR among girls (1976) and women (1977). A participant of 5 female championships of USSR, the best result in the other championships: 1979 - the 2nd - 4th place. A winner of 5 Olympiads (1978 - 86) in the structure of the combined team of USSR, during three of them she showed the best result on the 1st board: 1978 - 9 points of 11; 1980 - 11 1/2 of 13; 1986 - 8 of 10 points.
In the 15-year age Chiburdanidze got the right to participate in the Interzonal tournament in Tbilisi (1976) - the 2nd - 3rd place. She also won the matches of contenders of the cycle of 1977-78: quarter of the final in the play with N. Alexandria - 5 1/2: 4 1/2 (+3, -2, =5), semifinal in the play with E. Akhmylovskaya - 6 1/2:5 1/2 (+4, -3, =5), final in the play with A. Kushnir - 7 1/2: 6 1/2 (+5, -4, =5). In 1978, having won the match for the world championship in the play with N. Gaprindashvili - 8 1/2: 6 1/2, the seventeen-year chess player became by the youngest world champion in the chess history.
Since 12-year age Chiburdanidze takes part in the male competitions. She successfully played in many All-Union and International competitions.
Chiburdanidze is rewarded by the award of Friendship of People for the achievements in the chess sphere (1981) and by the award of the Labour Red Banner (1985).
