 Match of the New Era: Kasparov versus Deep Junior!
Coming soon in chess 8/8/2002 For the first time in history the Match of the New Era will be held from October, 1 up to October, 13 in Jerusalem. The world's number one human chess player, Garry Kasparov, will battle versus the reigning World Computer Chess Champion program, Junior. Although Kasparov has the edge in terms of his great experience and intuitive understanding of chess, even the strongest human players sometimes make oversights that can be spotted by the deep analysis of the best computer programs. Also, of course, Junior will never get tired or feel under stress. It is partly because of these differences between the strengths of Kasparov and Junior that the match is promising to be so exciting!

 Play in four hands
Coming soon in chess 13/8/2002 Two most intriguing chess matches from the series "A man against a computer" will be started in autumn, during three days' interval. On October 1, the 13th chess King Garry Kasparov will play the match with the World Champion among computer games, - "Deep Junuior" in Jerusalem, and already on October 4, the world champion on classical chess, Vladimir Kramnik, will struggle with "Deep Fritz" in Bahrein.

 New Match of the Century
Coming soon in chess 14/8/2002 There was an ITAR-TASS press conference on Tuesday 12th June 2002 attended by Kirsan Ilyumzhinov,Garry Kasparov,Slava Fetisov (Russian minister of sport) and Andrey Selivanov (President of Russian chess federation) to officially announce a new "Match of Century". The famous match between Soviets and the Rest of the World was first held in Belgrade 1970 and again in London in 1984. This time it will be Russia on its own. It is to be held in September 8th-12th 2002 in Moscow over 10 boards using a Scheveningen System and rapid chess (25+10). The exact composition of the teams is to be announced but Vladimir Kramnik,Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov,Alexander Khalifman,Alexander Morozevich,Evgeny Bareev, Alexander Grischuk,Peter Svidler,Alexey Dreev and probably either Sergey Rublevsky,Vadim Zvjagintsev or Alexander Motylev. The opposition will be Viswanathan Anand,Ruslan Ponomariov, Vesselin Topalov,Vassily Ivanchuk,Boris Gelfand,Peter Leko,Aleksei Shirov,Judit Polgar and Ye Jiangchuan and possibly Ilia Smirin,Vladimir Akopian,Zurab Azmaiparashvili,Joel Lautier,Rustam Kasimdzhanov,Nigel Short and Loek van Wely.

 Kasparov - Timman Rapid Match
Coming soon in chess 14/8/2002 There will be a 6 game rapid match between Garry Kasparov and Jan Timman on November 13th-14th 2002 in the Dutch city of Lelystad. Six games will be played. The winner gets 55. 000 euros.

 The 65th Corus Chess tournament in Wijk-aan-Zee
Coming soon in chess 17/9/2002 The 65th Corus Chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee takes place January 10th-26th 2003. Players include Vladimir Kramnik, Ruslan Ponomariov,Viswanathan Anand, Vesselin Topalov and Vassily Ivanchuk, Jan Timman and Loek Van Wely. Garry Kasparov has turned down his invitation and will be missing for the second year in a row. He cites a busy schedule and with appearances at Linares and a match against Ponomariov and potentially one against the winner of Kramnik - Leko he probably has a point (of course Ponomariov also has the same but he is 20 years younger).

 The FIDE World Cup in Hyderabad
Coming soon in chess 17/9/2002 The FIDE World Cup in Hyderabad, India takes place 9th-20th October 2002. The event looks sure to be missing many of the top stars. Although the organisers remain hopeful that some will play Ruslan Ponomariov, Viswanathan Anand, Alexander Grischuk, Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Vesselin Topalov, Michael Adams, Boris Gelfand and Peter Leko have all failed to sign up so far.

 Open Czech Mountains
Coming soon in chess 23/9/2002 The 3rd International Chess Tournament, a part of Series CZECH TOUR 2002/2003, will be held from 17 up to 24 October, 2002, in Bedrichov town, which is situated on the Jizerske mountains, Czech Republic.
Place of doing: Holiday resort ”Bila vrana”, Czech Republic;
System: Swiss system of 9 rounds, results will be included into FIDE;
Criteria used for ranking and prizes distribution: 1. number of points, 2. Progressive score, 3. Buchholz, 4. average ELO of rivals, 5. lot, prizes are distributed according to Hort system between the number of players corresponding to number of advertised prizes;
Rating: 40 moves per 2 hours and half an hour for each player to finish the game;
Tournament prize fund: 20.000 CZK total.
Financial prizes in CZK (payments in EUR or USD possible): 1. prize – 7000, 2.- 5000, 3.- 3000, 4.- 2000, 5.-6. 1000, 7.-8. 500.

Coming soon in chess 18/10/2002 On October 25, the 35th All-World chess Olympiad with the participation of more than 120 teams, will be started in the Slavonian city of Bled. Lists of both Russian combined teams, which now conduct the training meeting, have already conformed. Garry Kasparov will head the combined team among men, the other leading grandmasters, Peter Svidler and Alexander Khalifman from Saint-Petersburg, Muscovites Alexander Motozevich and Alexander Grischuk, Sergei Rublevsky from Kazan (trainer - the grandmaster from Ekaterinburg, Naum Rashkovsky), will play together with him. Coming soon in chess 12/11/2002 According to ITAR-TASS, on December 19 and 20 the rapid match on chess between the 12th and 13th world champions, Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov, will be held in New York.

There will be a four game match (per 2 games a day) 25 mins + 10 secs each day. The match will take place in the ABC Studios in Times Square, in the center of Manhattan. The company "X Z D World", which is engaged in promotion of telecommunications and intellectual games on the market, entertainments and educational programs, is the organizer of the next meeting of two grandmasters. According to its version, the forthcoming battle will be called "The champions' match". The live broadcast of the play via Internet is stipulated. The honorariums' sums of Karpov and Kasparov are not called.

Coming soon in chess 9/1/2003 The world chess player number 1, Russian Garry Kasparov (FIDE rating in January - 2847) and the world champion on classical chess, Vladimir Kramnik (Russia, 2807) will participate at the same competition for the first time after the match, held at the Moscow Columnar hall in the autumn of 2001. Besides them, the world FIDE champion Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukraine, 2734), Viswanathan Anand (India, 2753), the competitor of Kramnik at the semifinal match of the unifying FIDE cycle, the winner of the selective tournament "Einshtein-group", Peter Leko (Hungary, 2736), Spaniard Fransisco Vallejo (2629) and the youthful Azerbaijan grandmaster Teimour Radjabov (2624), made his debut at the most prestigious world chess tournament, will play at the super tournament of the XXth category.

"Linares-2003" will be started on February 22 and finished on March, 9. This tournament will be held in two rounds, "SE" correspondent, Yury Vasiliev, informs.

Coming soon in chess 27/2/2003 Karsten Henzel, the manager of the Russian, Vladimir Kramnik and Hungarian Peter Leko, claimed, that the match of his wards (one of the links of the uniting champion's cycle of FIDE) would be started presumably on May 31 this year.

Both of participants also in a writing assured of their agreement to play also in autumn with the winner of the pair Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukraine) - Garry Kasparov (Russia), which will start playing in Buenos-Aires on June, 19. The prize fund and place of the struggle, held in May, are not still specified, the assistant of the FIDE president, Berik Balgabaev, informs.

Coming soon in chess 20/6/2003 As the "SE" correspondent Yury Vasiliev informed, the FIDE world champion Ruslan Ponomariov and the official FIDE contender, a leader of the world rating, Garry Kasparov, received letters from the president of the International chess federation, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov with a notification about that their match will be held in September in Yalta. The official announcement about the match is being expected at the end of June or at the beginning of July.
